After a great deal of anticipation, the AlphaRev team have opened up the beta of AlphaRev X to the public. AlphaRev X allows users of certain HTC phones (including the Desire and Wildfire) to change their phone from S-ON to S-OFF. This in turn allows users to root their phone, install a custom recovery tool and install custom ROMs.
I tried the process using my HTC Wildfire, and am happy to report that everything worked without any problems at all. My Wildfire is now running CyanogenMod, a customised Gingerbread distribution. It is now running much quicker than it was under the stock Froyo firmware and I’m much happier with the responsiveness of the phone.
